Along this section of Highway 19, visitors are fascinated by dozens of waterfalls, gulches and old railway bridges at Kolekole Beach Park, Hakalau and Nanue. This beautiful region has limited pull-over areas, but is worth the walk from safe parking places along the road. From MP7 to MP11 is the 4-mile Onomea scenic route which is a segment of the old "belt" road and original island trail system. The drive has a section of the ancient Alaloa Coastal Trail which leads to Kahalii, a former Hawaiian fishing village. It is a 15 minute walk from the roadside down to the ocean at approximately 1 mile from the Papaikou entry and 3 miles from the Pepeekeo entry. Other features include streams, waterfalls, a water tunnel, lookouts, shops and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens (RR).
